Map of Struggles against SEZs in India →
This map is from an article called “1,620.361 ha of discontent” in the latest issue of Down to Earth that looks at the controversies over Korean company POSCO’s attempts to build a giant steel plant, an iron ore mine, and a port in the Indian state of Orissa.  The state seems ready to hand over the land to POSCO despite many complaints about its environmental impact, its...

(excerpt): “…I’d say the biggest indictment of all is that we are still a country, a culture, a society which continues to nurture and practice the notion of untouchability. While our economists number-crunch and boast about the growth rate, a million people — human scavengers — earn their living carrying several kilos of other people’s shit on their heads every day. And if they didn’t...

almost 5 million truckers on strike in India
“Truckers go on countrywide strike as talks fail” (The Hindu) - Strike call was given by the All-India Motor Transportation Corporation (AIMTC) to protest the hiked toll tax and high duty on diesel fuel. “India Truckers Strike over Fuel” (BBC) “India truck strike starts to spur some price rises” (Reuters) - Kerala state is feeling the pinch stronger than...
