The author of one of my favorite novels, Infinite Jest, was found dead in his home yesterday. He was 46. He hung himself. What a tragic loss of such a young, brilliant person! Based on the twisted characters in his writing, I imagine that he had been struggling with his demons of addictions for a long time.*

The police’s use of pepper spray, tazers, rubber bullets, and stun grenades amounts to torture, as defined by Amnesty International. The city of St. Paul knew that they would get sued for telling their police to use these weapons of torture against protesters, as evidenced by their taking out insurance against such suits.
