This article by Marjorie Cohn tells of the preemptive raids and detentions against potential RNC protesters, as well as against Food not Bombs and the indymedia group I-Witness Video. The police were clearly politically motivated in these raids, as is evident by their seizure of boxes of political literature, and by their highlighting the anarchist character of this literature in their media reports. These actions reveal the always already political character of the police: from their position as the state’s repressive apparatus, they are inherently opposed to political movements against the state, i.e., anarchism. Refuse to believe the ideology that the police are neutral! They embody the authoritarian heart of the state.
