“This is what a police state looks like!” — An anti-authoritarian chant with a variation on the classic “this is what democracy looks like” - protesting at the RNC, in front of the convention center. “[call]: Tell me what a police state looks like! [response]: This is what a police state looks like! [while pointing at the lineup of riot cops]”. The cops had set up a a narrow (10 foot wide) cage through which to funnel protesters like sheep. At one point we were all making sheep noises (‘baaa’) at the many cops in riot gear who lined the other side of the cage. Some daring protesters started to shake the cage, but the riot cops approached threatened them with serious weapons (tear gas guns and tazers). Some other chants were: “whose cage? Our cage!” (a variation on “whose streets? our streets!); and the most constructive, solidarity-engendering one was when we held up our anti-capitalist bloc for a few minutes letting the groups ahead of us move on so that a space opened up through the whole cage, and then we counted down from 10 to 1 and yelled in unison, “REVOLUTION!!!” while running through the cage with fists raised. Another great chant was: “Capitalism? No! Patriarchy? No! War? No!… Revolution, yea-a-ah!”
