Despite McCain’s appearing better than the unabashed bigots in his crowd, he’s not all that much better. In his response to the woman who says “I can’t trust Obama … he’s an Arab,” McCain says “no, ma’am, he’s a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements on fundamental issues. He’s not.” McCain’s response is missing two key sentences, and without them he implies that there’s something inherently wrong with being “an Arab.” He should have said “regardless of whether or not Obama is an Arab, there is nothing wrong with being an Arab. Many Arabs are decent citizens.” (for bonus points, he should have said: “the stereotype of Arabs as evil people is one that the Republican Party, including myself, and the media, have produced and perpetuated through our projecting our own insecurities onto them as ‘terrorists.’ Our insecurities are produced by the capitalist system, which is now erupting in financial crises.”) (Thanks to Jecca for this critique (I added the bonus part)).
