what a funny election!

“Yo mama so fat, she thinks the G8 is a Value Meal.”  (‘Yo mama so fat’ political fights via boing boing)

Monday’s The Daily Show - Jon Stewart is the only critical, insightful news to watch these days. He destroyed the latest Republican bullshit line about “real America” in small, racist, ass-backwards towns, such as with campaign manager Pfotenhauer’s statement that unlike Northern Virginia, “the rest of the state - real Virginia if you will - will be very responsive to Mr. McCain’s message.”  Jon retorts, “I always thought the two Virginias were West … and Virginia.  Not so, there’s a ‘real Virginia’ which might even include West Virginia - where the message of John McCain and the republicans resonates, and then there’s ‘fake Virginia’ where evil shadow versions of Virginians dance among the tarred remains of the righteous, their eery cries mocking all that is decent and just.  Neigh! This virginia is not for lovers!”

Then, in response to Palin’s drivel about “real America, the patriotic, pro-America parts of this great nation” Jon uses this image of the “real America that matters, the one that Sarah Palin will still take questions from,” and he turns this trope against the McCain campaign in a powerful way by pointing up the hypocrisy of their fetishizing 9/11 while denigrating the very people in the cities where 9/11 occurred.   “So, if small towns are the real America, that would make big cities like Washington D.C. and New York City the capitals of ‘fake America’ - like the epicenter of fake America, the … oh, what’s the word I’m looking for, the ‘ground zero’ of anti-America. I bet bin Laden feels like a real asshole now. ‘What I bombed the wrong America, that’s it, i’m going in to hiding.  I’m too embarrassed!’”  … “Jeez I guess if you’re from New York City and you signed up to fight in Iraq and you died, I guess it doesn’t count.”   To sum up how pissed Jon is about this ‘real/fake America’ dichotomy, at the end of the show, he ‘apologizes’ for an earlier expression of ‘fuck you’ to Sarah Palin, and clarifies that he should have addressed the whole right-wing cabal with a ‘fuck all y’all’.
